TOAD C++ GUI Library for Cocoa: Halted; Fischland: Running
I was stuck with some problems with the Cocoa port of TOAD for sometime, which I started to speed up Fischland, my 2D vector graphics program to draw comics.
Yesterday, being eager to draw something, I installed trial versions of Anime Studio™ and Adobe Illustrator™ to find out if they are an alternative. An alternative of investing money instead of time.
Well Anime Studio is a bitmap based program and some professional artists seem to use it, but it is, well, bitmap based. This means that you must think in panels from the very beginning because rearranging the pictures is difficult and rescaling the images breaks the quality.
Adobe Illustrator, I read it's manual when designing Fischland but things are actually different. And I like my own ideas better. ;)
Corel Painter™? Well my Wacom came with another application from Corel and now the trial version believes it has already expired. It even installed itself into the wrong folder under Mac OS X.
But I also found out that Illustrator has the same performance constraints Fischland has to face and is disabling anti-aliasing or just draws outlines when operations would be to expensive otherwise. So it is my 1GHz G4 and not the software, that I decided to continue the X11 version from now on, beginning with the same optimizations Illustrator is doing.
